Dive in the Riviera Maya

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the second largest reef system on earth. My dive master Bertrand at Bluekaidive offers Open Water certification, Discovery Scuba, and Cozumel reef dives.

Dive in the Riviera Maya

The waters between Isla Cozumel and Playa del Carmen are world-renowned as a diver's paradise. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef stretches the entire length of the Riviera Maya coastline — second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef in sheer size — and beneath the surface lies one of the most spectacular marine ecosystems on earth.

Diving the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, Riviera Maya

I got my open water scuba certification in these waters. On my dives I saw bull sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles, alongside extraordinarily diverse reef life on every single dive. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced diver, you will not want to leave the Riviera Maya without getting in the water.

Why These Waters

The reef system here is exceptional for one reason above all others: visibility. The Caribbean waters off Cozumel regularly reach 30 metres of visibility — conditions that most diving destinations in the world cannot match. Combined with the sheer diversity of marine life (over 500 species of fish, dozens of coral varieties, sea turtles, rays, and nurse sharks), it creates an underwater experience that stays with you.

The currents on the Cozumel side create perfect drift dives — you move through the reef effortlessly, covering ground while the marine life comes to you.

My Dive Instructor

The right instructor makes all the difference. After diving with several operators in the Riviera Maya, my personal recommendation is Bertrand at Bluekaidive. He is the dive master I refer all Tranquilo guests to — patient, professional, and genuinely passionate about sharing these waters with people who have never dived before.

Dive Master Bertrand with guests at Bluekaidive

Here are his three most popular dive packages.

1. Open Water Certification

$400 USD · 2 days

The PADI Open Water certification is the global standard for recreational diving — once certified, you can dive any open water surface in the world. Bertrand runs a two-day program:

Day 1

  • Morning: pool session to practice skills in controlled conditions
  • Afternoon: 2 open water dives in the ocean

Day 2

  • Morning: 2 open water dives
  • Afternoon: final exam

You leave certified for life. Diving is a profoundly rewarding sport — the certification is the door to exploring reefs, wrecks, and underwater worlds wherever you travel from this point forward.

One of the skills tested in the open water certification: what to do when you run out of air.

2. Discovery Scuba Diving

$130 USD · 1 day

Not sure if diving is for you? The Discovery Scuba program lets you experience an actual dive without any certification — Bertrand guides you through the basics and takes you into the water to see for yourself.

Includes:

  • 2 tanks
  • Maximum dive depth of 12 metres
  • Full equipment and guided supervision throughout

This is the ideal introduction for anyone curious but not ready to commit to a full certification. Many guests who do the Discovery dive immediately book their Open Water course afterward.

3. Cozumel Diving

$125 USD · Certified Divers Only

The signature experience. Two tank dives on the Cozumel reef — the most celebrated dive destination in the Caribbean. Palancar Gardens, Santa Rosa Wall, Columbia Deep — these are bucket-list dive sites.

Includes:

  • 2 tanks
  • Bertrand as your dive master
  • Access to Cozumel's world-class reef systems

Not included:

  • Cozumel ferry ($25 USD)
  • Equipment rental ($15 USD)

Note: Certified divers only for this package.

What to Expect Underwater

The Riviera Maya reef is one of the few places in the world where beginner divers and experienced divers have equally remarkable experiences. The shallow reef gardens off Playa del Carmen are alive with colour even at 5–10 metres. The Cozumel walls and drift dives reward experienced divers with encounters — bull sharks at certain sites, eagle rays, hawksbill turtles, and occasionally whale sharks between May and September.

Common marine life you will encounter:

  • Green and hawksbill sea turtles
  • Eagle rays and manta rays
  • Nurse sharks and bull sharks (seasonal/site-specific)
  • Moray eels, lionfish, and barracuda
  • Hundreds of reef fish species across every colour of the spectrum
